Yoga at Yoga Barn, Ubud, Bali

Last year in September, I was in Bali and I had to try a yoga class in that fairy tale place. Bali is truly an amazing place with outstanding nature and with a powerful holiday vibe. No wonder that so many yoga retreats are being hold there, it is a perfect place to reconnect with yourself and with nature.

So, once I was there I started to do some research about the best yoga studios in Bali and I came over The Yoga Barn in Ubud. It has some very good reviews on the internet and I had to try it. And God I loved it!

First of all, the location is mesmerizing. The Yoga Barn is located in Ubud, in the rich, luxurious jungle. The nature out there is astonishing and the vibe is so calm, peaceful and fresh. The studio is slightly away from the main road and it is withdrawn from the bustle.

Once you enter the studio you instantly feel like you just walked into a yoga community. The setting is welcoming, warm, professional and in the same time rustic. There are yogis everywhere, some waiting for the class to start, some enjoying a cup of tea or a fresh, some socializing. There is also a shop with yoga props and accessories. The stuff is warm and welcoming.

I attended a hatha yoga class, led by Carlos Romero. It was my first yoga experience in a studio outside my country, Romania, so I didn’t really knew what to expect, but surely I hoped for something more intense than what I could find in my country at that moment. And, damn, I did! The class was surely not for beginners and I loved it! At that time I really wanted to go further with my practice and challenge myself and in my country, most of the classes are for beginners, really soft and didn’t found myself in those type of classes anymore.

Let’s talk a little bit more about the setting (LOL). So the class took place a the upper floor of the building, which really looked like a barn. The roof was made out of wood and covered with alang alang grass (I think so, not sure what really was) and there were no windows, everything around was opened and jungle was surrounded the hole room. You could here the birds, monkeys and all the animals, which made you connect strongly with nature. The air was warm, just perfect for yoga, and humid which made you sweat much more. The space was big, they had lots of mats and props and the music was in perfect harmony with the setting. (I really have a problem with yoga music, because most of them just distract me and make me disconnect with myself and connect to much with the music).

The hatha yoga class led by Carlos Romero was in vinyasa style, fast paced, for intermediate students (besides the fast pace, there were also a couple of inversions including Sirsasana/head stand) and had a very pleasant fluidity. The verbal instructions weren’t too many, this is what also kept the fluidity of the class and this is another reason this class wasn’t for beginners. The way that Carlos led the class was just what was needed so that you remain connected with everything that the setting was offering and with yourself, there in the middle of the jungle.

By the end of the class, we were sweating, energized and balanced. We left The Yoga Barn full of positive vibes and with a strong feeling of connection.

If you are in Ubud, you should definitely try a yoga class at Yoga Barn. They have over 20 yoga teachers, classes run all day from 7 AM till 9 PM and there many stiles of yoga for different levels (Kundalini, Yin, Hatha, Restorative, Intro, etc.) and also meditation classes, massage and astrology.

That being said, my personal experience with the Yoga Barn was a real pleasure. I loved everything about it and if I’l ever go back to Ubud, for sure I’ll drop in a yoga class at the Yoga Barn.
